PUBLIC NOTICE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THE EAST FORK HUMPTULIPS VEGETATION PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT USDA-Forest Service Pacific District Olympic National Forest Grays Harbor County, Washington
The Environmental Assessment (EA) for the East Fork Humptulips Vegetation Project is available for review and comment in accordance with 36 CFR 215. The comment period ends 30 days following the date of publication of the legal notice in the newspaper of record (The Daily World). Commenters wishing to be eligible to appeal must include a signature or be able to provide other verification of identity upon request. The purpose of the proposed thinning is to implement the Forest Plan by increasing forest structural diversity and accelerating the development of late-successional forest characteristics in selected forest stands in the East Fork Humptulips River Watershed. The 19,760-acre planning area encompasses the Upper East Fork Humptulips River, the Middle East Fork Humptulips River catchment, and a small piece of the Lower East Fork Humptulips River catchment. The planning area is approximately 5 miles west of Wynoochee Lake and 8 miles east of US 101. The legal location of the project is: T21N, R08W, Sections 4-9 and 16-18; T21N, R09W, Section 1; T22N, R08W, Sections 4, 5, 9, 10, 15-17, 20, 21, 28, 29, 32, 33, and 34; and T22N, R09W, Sections 24 and 25. The EA analyzes four alternatives: A) No Action; B) commercially thin about 3.306 acres using ~13 miles of unclassified road, ~0.5 miles of decommissioned road, and ~1.55 miles of new temporary road; C) commercially thin about 2,394 acres (160 by helicopter) using approximately 9 miles of existing unclassified roads, 0.34 miles of previously decommissioned road, 1.25 miles of new temporary road construction.; and D) commercially thin about 3,306 acres using approximately 9 miles of existing unclassified roads, about 0.5 miles of existing decommissioned roads, and 0.76 miles of new road construction. Unclassified roads and new temporary roads used would be decommissioned after the thinning. Pacific District Ranger Dean Millet is the Responsible Official for this proposed action.
