Because of space considerations, not all the stories and features available to The Daily World and its readers can appear in print. One of those features is a weekly column called Voices of Faith that originally appears in the Kansas City Star. This week’s column asks the question: What place does “spirit” have in your family? The column can be found at thedailyworld.com under Lifestyle Columnists, or by typing bit.ly/1vlKTTH into your browser.

Faces of Faith — Life after loss

Losing someone you care about is never easy. Loss may come because of a prolonged illness or an unexpected incident. Regardless of the cause, the loss is followed by a time of grief. We miss the one we lost.

Faces of Faith — An open hand

In our reading, John 9:1-41, we have the story of Jesus healing a man born blind. The story reminds me of the convictions each of us holds dear. We can hold them tightly to assure we live by them or, we can hold them gently in our open hands so others can see them and discuss them with us and adapt them for themselves. If the convictions are true, they will always be there but if we are holding onto something that is false, we might be able to see that at some point.

Lenten dinners planned

The Willapa Harbor Ministerial Association is sponsoring five Wednesday night soup suppers and services during the church season of Lent, the time of preparation for Easter. A simple supper of soup and bread will be served at 6 p.m., followed by a time of prayer, song and a Bible-based drama at approximately 6:35. The evening is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be received to support the association’s emergency assistance fund.

Sarah Monroe — God with us

Remember that Christmas song we sometimes sing? “O come, O come Emmanuel”? The gospel of Matthew introduces Jesus in the very first chapter as “Emmanuel” and, in the Hebrew, it means “God with us.” So, according to Matthew, God comes to us in Jesus, in this wandering teacher from northern Palestine, from a place called Galilee.
