Shelly Dixon is the owner of Lana’s Hangar Café, KCM Trucking and Hangers new and gently used clothing and shoes shop. She was born on the Harbor, left as a child and returned to raise her son Eric here. She opened Lanas in May of 2007 after 10 years of working in the restaraunt business as both a waitress and cook. Recently she opened the newest business.
What led to you opening Hanger’s in downtown Hoquiam?
I love to shop and there’s not a lot of shopping here on the Harbor, so I was in Olympia at a store like this and decided to expand on it. During my every day travel to the post office and the bank, I would turn down 7th Street and see the sign on (the building) saying “for lease.” With it being a clothing store prior, I went home, worked up a business plan and I figured it was the place.
How has the response been to you opening a store in downtown Hoquiam?
Well I was not thinking it would be busy from the get-go but with Facebook, the radio and newspaper, it has been doing better then actually expected.
Was there a particularly challenging aspect of opening Hanger’s?
None really other than finding the time for another business, which in itself is a challenge.
What is your favorite part of being your own boss?
Employing some amazing people.
Any plans for future endeavors?
Well, I never really planned this one, so with that said I guess you never know!
What are the attributes of a successful business?
Being consistent with your hours, food, etc. I figure if you build it, they will come. With Lana’s being out of the way, that has only proven if you run a business right, you can be successful. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very rewarding. My family stuck beside me through it all, including my boyfriend Keith (my rock/partner). Without all of them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
What do you hope will happen in the next 10 years for this area (especially for businesses)?
I would like to see more businesses to open up and employ more people so the Harbor will grow and expand.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Well, there is not a lot of time left (but I enjoy) spending time with my family, and there is a lot of us so, celebrating birthdays, BBQs and holidays is always on my schedule. Watching my son both play and coach sports is another thing. I also like going to the the casino and I would like to travel more someday.
Is there anything else about you as a business owner we should know?
Well, I was a single mom when I decided to open Lana’s with very little money backing me and an amazing support system I managed to take a closed business and make it very successful place.
