Arrest made in rape of minor case

More than a year after a warrant was issued for his arrest, a Tacoma man accused of raping a 15-year-old Elma girl appeared in Grays Harbor Superior Court.

Micheal D. Monasmith, 41, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to third-degree child rape and sexual exploitation of a minor.

On July 31, 2012, he allegedly took lewd photographs of a then-15-year-old girl near the fishing shelter at Friend’s Landing. A passerby reported the incident.

The girl told police “she had been trying to start a modeling career and met the defendant over the Internet,” court documents state.

Monasmith is accused of raping the girl July 1, at an Elma hotel.

Charges were filed Dec. 7, 2012, but Monasmith was at large until Jan. 15 of this year, when he was arrested in King County.

“Sometimes it takes them a while to figure out where they’re at,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Katie Svoboda said.

Monasmith is held in Grays Harbor County Jail with $50,000 bail.
