Collision knocks out power to 1,500 East County customers

About 1,500 households in Oakville, Malone and Porter were without power for much of Friday afternoon after a man lost control of his car and slid into a power pole in Oakville.

At about 11:15 a.m. Friday, a 63-year-old Tacoma man was northbound on South Bank Road at Norton Road when he lost control of his vehicle around a left-hand curve. He slid across the road, into the southbound shoulder and struck a power pole broadside.

With the force of the collision, the pole ended up about three feet into the man’s car, eventually breaking. The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where his condition was unavailable as of Friday evening.

Power was out until nearly 6 p.m. for most of the area. A small number of homes on Norton Road were out longer because crews discovered a fallen tree on the line and needed more time to repair the damage.
