Fundraising totals for Relay for Life of East Grays Harbor were much lower than expected this year, with the event drawing only $37,894. Event organizers had hoped to raise $66,000.
This isn’t the first time the Elma-based event has had trouble reaching its fundraising goal. Last year, teams collected $53,082 for cancer research when they had hoped to collect $70,000.
But money will continue trickling in throughout the summer — the fundraising deadline is Aug. 31.
And while Relay for Life was largely created to generate money for cancer research and American Cancer Society programs, Relay for Life of East Grays Harbor Chair Marsha Hendrick emphasized the social aspects of the event — community building and supporting cancer patients — during her opening speech June 13.
“We’re all here for the same reason: to end cancer,” Hendrick said. “And there’s a great community that comes with that.”
Fundraisers for the neighboring Relay for Life of Grays Harbor also had trouble reaching their goal this year. Teams for the Hoquiam-based event have collected $305,828 and had hoped to raise $350,000.
