Fire started by burned food destroys mobile home

Two people were able to escape their burning mobile home Saturday afternoon despite their smoke detectors not working, the Montesano Fire Department reported.

The people were asleep when the fire started about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, but were awakened by the smell of smoke, according to a press release from Chief Corey Rux. The found the majority of their home on fire and were able to evacuate safely.

Montesano firefighters responded to the 2300 block of East Beacon Avenue, but the mobile home was already well involved, the press release states.

The investigation showed the fire was caused accidentally by burned food on the stove. The home had smoke detectors but they did not alarm, according to the press release.

“This serves as a reminder to ensure that we test our smoke detectors regularly and change batteries at least twice a year,” Rux wrote.
