Hitchhiker sexually assaulted in Montesano

A 21-year-old Cosmopolis woman was sexually assaulted Monday night while hitchhiking on Geissler Road in Montesano, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The woman had been camping with her parents near Wynooche Wildwood when at some point in the night she left her tent, unbeknownst to her parents, and walked toward State Route 12, Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate said.

The woman told police she was picked up by a silver four-door car and offered a ride by a man driving alone. After she accepted, the driver sexually assaulted her, she told police.

“After the assault, the victim was able to exit the vehicle and ended up in the ditch,” Shumate said.

The parents, still thinking their daughter was in her tent, left the park at around 11:20 p.m. and saw a woman in the ditch about two blocks south of the park.

“When they stopped to check on the person, they realized at that point the female was their daughter and took her to the hospital,” Shumate said.

The woman was taken to Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma, then later to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for a sexual assault exam. She suffered minor scratches to her hands.

She described her attacker as a white man between 40 and 50 years old, with a full beard and a scar below his left eye. Investigators are working to develop more information.
