Olson farther ahead in tight race for second place

Republican Keith Olson now has a seven vote lead over Democrat Al Smith in the race for second place in the Grays Harbor County Commissioner District 3 race in the latest update of ballot count, released Tuesday.

Olson went from trailing Smith by 58 votes on Aug. 5 to leading by a whisper-thin margin of four votes in the last count, released Aug. 7.

Cosmopolis Mayor Vickie Raines, running with no party preference, will head into the general election with more then 33 percent of the vote. A fourth candidate, Jim Heikel, conceded Aug. 6.

A manual recount may be necessary to find out who will challenge her in the November election. Raines now has 1,848 votes, Olson, 1,454 and Smith, 1,447.

The next ballot count is due out Aug. 19 when the election is to be certified.
