Pacific Beach Elementary School students were evacuated today after a compromised propane tank began leaking and creating a “significantly” strong odor, according to school officials.
After notice from Pacific Beach Fire Department, the school evacuated children to the nearby Pacific Beach naval base while officials air out the building.
“The naval base was very cooperative, putting us in facilities where there are games and into a theater where they put on a movie, and just created a great atmosphere,” said North Beach Superintendent Stan Pinnick, adding they plan is to bus the children back around lunchtime, “to be back on schedule.”
Lynette Reime, Pacific Beach Elementary School principal, said the evacuation was more of a precaution in case students have asthma or allergies that could be affected by the leak.
Pacific Beach Fire District 8 was not yet available for comment on the situation.
