A Montesano man was saved by his smoke detector early Friday morning, the Montesano Fire Department reported.
Firefighters responded at about 4 a.m. Friday to the home in the 500 block of N. 3rd Street. The fire had already spread from the attached garage well into the house, causing extensive damage.
Firefighers were able to contain the blaze to that home, and the cause is under investigation.
Chief Corey Rux noted the man had been asleep when the fire started, but was awoken by his smoke detector and able to escape the house unharmed.
“This serves as a reminder to ensure that we test our smoke detectors regularly and change batteries at least twice a year,” he wrote in a press release.
