Westport Shipyard tweaks name and is hiring

Westport Shipyard, Inc. will now be known as Westport LLC, and they are hiring, General Manager Dave Hagiwara said Monday.

The large yacht builder, with three locations in the state and a sales office and a marina in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., changed hands in June when it was purchased by the Chouest family of Louisiana.

Westport LLC just hired two engineers at the facility in Port Angeles and three laminators for the operation in Westport, Hagiwara said. There are more jobs posted on the website, which can be found at westportyachts.com. Currently, it says they are looking for a designer in joinery and a designer in systems for Port Angeles and two more laminators for Westport.

As business ramps up, the company will hire more people involved in building the big composite yachts: plumbers, electricians and finish carpenters, Hagiwara said. Westport has completed more than 120 yachts since 2000 and employs more than 400 skilled workers.

The change in name has to do with being acquired and with economies of scale, Hagiwara said. From now on, company stationery and other documents will bear the name Westport LLC, while the website and email will become westportyachts.com.

Westport has its own in-house design and development team. The third location here is in Hoquiam, where they have a long term lease.

Gary Chouest was a customer of Westport Shipyard before becoming majority owner. The family’s holdings include oil and gas marine transportation worldwide. They design sports fishing yachts on a 63-acre facility, called American Custom Yachts, in Stuart, Fla.
