Diesel fuel spill in Tacoma temporarily closes I-5 after DUI crash

A suspected drunken driver was arrested early Friday after striking a semi-truck on Interstate 5 and rupturing its fuel line, causing a freeway closure for 2 1/2 hours while crews cleaned up diesel fuel.

The accident happened about 2 a.m. near S. 38th Street.

Troopers said a 43-year-old Olympia man was traveling south on I-5 when he started to exit the freeway to state Route 16 but when suddenly cut back onto the freeway, striking a southbound semi-truck.

The truck’s fuel line ruptured and spilled gas in two lanes of I-5.

The Olympia man was taken an area hospital with unknown injuries and is expected to be arrested on suspicion of DUI after he is released.

The truck driver was not hurt.
