Cougar killed while attacking dog

WENATCHEE — A cougar is dead and a black Labrador retriever is recovering following an encounter between the two about four miles up Stemilt Creek Road early Sunday.

The dog’s owners woke up at about 3 a.m. to the sound of their dog yelping outside, where it sleeps, said Washington Department of Fish &Wildlife Officer Chris Erhardt.

He said the man went out on his porch and saw the cougar attacking his dog, so he shot twice, killing the cougar.

The man then called Wildlife officials, he said.

Erhardt said the cougar appeared to be healthy, and tracks indicated it was just passing through the area, with no indication it was hunting.

The dog is recovering with several stitches.
