Grandfather alerts family to house fire

EAST WENATCHEE — A grandfather woke up about 2:45 a.m. Sunday to sounds of a fire and got everyone out of an Eastside house safely.

The man saw flames on the deck of a house in the 6100 block of Terrace Place, said Brian Brett assistant chief for Douglas County Fire District 2. He woke up two children and their parents.

Everyone was out of the house when firefighters arrived. Brett said smoke detectors were also going off inside the house.

Brett said the cause is not suspicious but was still under investigation Monday morning. The fire, which began on a deck, damaged the first floor, half of the attic and an upstairs bedroom. There was smoke damage to the upstairs. Brett said the family has moved in with a nearby relative.

One of two pet guinea pigs died from smoke inhalation, Brett said. A second guinea pig was rescued by firefighters.
