Arta D. Wade

Arta Darlene Wade (Ruggles), 80, of Westport, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Her daughters were with her at the time of her passing. Arta was born January 13, 1934, in Seattle, to Floyd W. and Maude C. (Bowman) Ruggles. Arta was raised in Hobart, before moving to Ocosta in 1939. She graduated from Ocosta High School in 1952. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Wade on November 15, 1952. They were married 39 years and divorced in 1991.

Arta was a devoted mother and community volunteer. She served as a Bluebird leader, and volunteered many hours as a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary 3057, in Westport. Arta also volunteered many hours of service at the first Beach Clinic in Grayland.

Arta’s working career was as colorful as she was. She was employed as a cannery worker, a Post Office clerk, a waitress, a bartender and food service worker. Arta partnered with her sister in-law, Joan Ruggles, to operate the locally famous Popcorn Stand & Chowder Shack at the docks in Westport. At the age of 59, she returned to school earning a degree in Massage Therapy after which she practiced as a Licensed Massage Therapist.

Arta enjoyed cooking and entertaining for family and friends. Among her other interests were: singing, listening to music, dancing, playing cards, camping, fishing, bowling, canning, picking mushrooms, reading poetry, and painting.

Arta is remembered by her children as a mom with a wonderful sense of humor. She was a loving, caring and nurturing mother and grandmother. She will be missed very much by all who knew her.

Arta is survived by her siblings, Catherine Nelson, Claude Poole and Floyd Ruggles. She is also survived by her three children, Shelly Tikka and husband, Craig, Lynn Wade-Corbett and husband Bill, and Bill (Bubba) Wade; nine grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the many caring and selfless individuals who either called, visited or sent cards to mom. Their many acts of kindness are very much appreciated.

Please join us in celebrating Arta’s life at the Ocosta Recreation Hall on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 12 noon. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to: Ocosta Recreation Hall, c/o Martin Schroder, 1682 State Rt 105, Aberdeen WA 98520.
