Lifelong Harbor resident, Betty Jeane Hollingsworth, died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Tuesday, July 8, 2014. She was 83.
Betty was born in Aberdeen, May 15, 1931, the daughter of William and Myrtle (Matthews) Ashby. The family lived on the South Beach, and she had attended Ocosta schools. She had worked in canneries during the summers and for a short time at Kresses dime store in Aberdeen. She married Kenneth Hollingsworth in Ocosta on Oct. 9, 1948. They would make their home in South Bend for 39 years before his death there May 9, 1996. Later that year Betty came to Cosmopolis to live.
While living in South Bend, Betty had worked for eight years as a waitress at the H &H Café. She retired in 1982 to take care of ill family members.
She was a member of the South Bend Eagles Aerie and also enjoyed bowling, walking her dogs, reading, gardening, playing cards and watching the Seahawks. Her greatest joy was caring for the family and having “get-togethers.”
Betty is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Danny) Ellefson, Cosmopolis; a brother: Dave “Corky” (Linda) Hathaway, Aberdeen; also five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Lucy Hurst, Aberdeen. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Charles Hathaway; a daughter: Sherri Hughes, this last September, 2013; a brother, Charles Irwin Hathaway in 1935 and a sister, Barbara Maxine Ashby in 1929.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
