His family moved to Camp 5 at Grisdale where his father worked in the woods. They later lived in the Wishkah Valley area and he attended Wishkah and Hoquiam schools. Following his formal schooling he went to work in the woods.

He then moved to Moclips / Pacific Beach area where he worked in shingle mills including the M.R. Smith Shingle Mill. Then for more than 20 years he was the custodian at North Beach High School in Moclips until he retired in the mid 1980’s.

On January 1, 1967, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. From then on until his death he was an active member and elder at Pacific Beach Community Church.

Dennis loved his wife and family. He instilled in his children the love of the outdoors with many a camping or backpacking trip. He, his wife, Nancy, and kids backpacked most of the major trails in the Olympic Mountains, including the cross-country Bailey Range route. Dennis was an avid fisherman and hunter, keeping the family stocked with wild meat each year, especially those tasty forest grouse! In his later years he became a bird watcher and feeder.
