Long time Hoquiam resident Donna Stamwitz passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in the presence of her husband, Alan and her daughter, Katie. She was 64. Donna was born on January 1, 1950, to Franz and Martha Gruber in Aberdeen. She graduated in 1968, from Aberdeen Weatherwax High School and married Alan Stamwitz on August 14, 1971, in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Aberdeen.
Donna worked for Grays Harbor Paper, Simonson’s Gifts, and was a hostess, manager and cook at the Aberdeen Elks from 1985 to 2009.
Donna was a member of the Aberdeen Elks and also was a charter member of the Ladies of the Elks.
Donna had many interests, she loved and appreciated fine jewelry, cooking and collecting flow blue dinnerware. As a cook her prime rib was anticipated and enjoyed by many. She loved being around people.
Donna first became interested in volunteering at the Aberdeen Elks thru her husband’s involvement with the Elks Band as a clarinetist. Her interest increased and she was hired as the hostess and then the cook/manager of the Elks. She left as cook as the result of her illness in 2009, which was a cortical basal ganglionic degeneration that resulted in her death. In the early 70’s she bought and road her registered quarter horse, Sandy, on trails and participated in gaming shows. She traveled with her husband to several Elk National Conventions through his involvement with the Elks band and as Exalted Ruler of the Aberdeen Elks. As cook at the Elks she developed a recipe for a prime rib rub that was held in high regard. Several people would go to the kitchen when the prime rib came out of the oven to get a little taste. She enjoyed watching the gem shopping channel in the final months of her life. She was a devoted fan of Days of Our Lives, and always watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Alan took her to the Elks every day and enjoyed watching TV and kibitzing from Mark Dodd, her long time co-worker.
Donna is survived by her husband, Alan; daughter, Katie Marie Stamwitz Williams and her husband, Steve of Olympia; son, Jason Carl Stamwitz and his wife, Catherine of Casper, Wyo.; her grandchildren, Logan Carl Stamwitz and soon to be Penelope Anne Stamwitz due July 10, 2014; a brother, David (Cheryl) Gruber of Hoquiam; a sister-in-law, Debbie Franfjord Stamwitz of Puyallup; brothers-in-laws, Dale (Judy) Stamwitz of Colorado, and Elmer ( Donna) Burkhart of Wyoming.
