Dorothy N. McMeekin

Dorothy Nadine McMeekin, 91, lifetime resident of Grays Harbor, died, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital.

Dorothy was born on December 9, 1922 in Cowles, Nebraska to Frank and Ivy Thomas. She graduated from high school in Nebraska and worked as a dental assistance before marrying Robert David Bachtell in Fortuna, California in 1943 just before he was deployed to the Pacific during World War II. He proceeded her in death in 1969.

After the war, they moved to Montesano where Dorothy worked as a secretary at the Grays Harbor Treasurers office, for the Superintendent of Public Schools, and for Ocosta School District.

On May 18, 1970 Dorothy married John McMeekin at Lake Quinault Lodge. They lived in Central Park until just a few months before their deaths. Dorothy spent many hours in the woods with John, learning an appreciation and a love for the out of doors. They shared a love of writing stories and articles together. Dorothy’s other hobbies included sewing and knitting. John proceeded Dorothy in death by 5 months.

Dorothy was a member of Eastern Star and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Montesano. She became an ordained deacon in the church on May 18. 1970. Dorothy received much pleasure in officiated over baptisms and weddings, especially those of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Barbara Gronberg (Robert) of Spokane, her son Randy Bachtell (Candi) of Montesano, her step children, Mike McMeekin (Sue) of Montesano, Jaymee McMeekin (Barbara) of Central Park, Kathy Dodson of Sacramento, California, and Tara Sawyer (John) of Soap Lake, Washington. She has 11 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Eucharist and reception following will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Montesano at 2:00 pm. In leu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Montesano or Aberdeen Food Banks.
