Gertrude Heleena (Haskey) Mekosky, 95, passed away on December 17, 2013, at Hacienda Rehabilitation and Care Center in Sierra Vista, Ariz. She had been a resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., since 1988.
Gertrude was born in Aberdeen on September 27, 1918, to Stanley Haskey (Polish surname Wojciechowski) and Josefine (Hibior) Haskey. She enjoyed living with her siblings on a farm on Wishkah Road.
On December 27, 1938, she married Sigmond Mekosky, to whom she remained married until his death in 2002. The couple ran the Mekosky family dairy farm in the Wishkah Valley which they purchased from Sigmond’s parents. When Sigmond went to work in the local plywood mills, Gertrude managed the dairy and beef farm. They sold the farm in 1965, and moved to Aberdeen.
She was a volunteer in the Air Force Ground Observer Corp having served over 3000 hours before the service was decommissioned in 1958. Gertrude joined the Eagle’s Auxiliary in 1967, and served five years as the secretary and bingo manager for 16 years. She volunteered in an Aberdeen nursing home in the 1970s. She was a member of the Busy Bee Club in the 1980s. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Through the years she enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, volunteer work, and her pet kitty cats.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Bill) Stehman of Arizona; a son, Sigmond Stanley (Elaine) Mekosky of Washington; granddaughters, Melodi Michelle (Michael) Downs of Washington, Bridgette Elaine (Cameron) Gotts of Washington; three great-grandsons, Karl Downs, Israel Downs, and Brady Gotts; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Gertrude joins her parents, Stanley and Josefine Haskey; her husband, Sigmond Mekosky; her sisters, Lottie (Haskey) Mrozeski, Rose (Haskey) Smith, and Tillie (Haskey) Zurich; and her brothers, John Haskey and Ed Haskey who preceded her in death.
Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Wishkah Valley, Aberdeen, Washington.
