Major Clenton Joines, a 61-year Harbor resident, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at his Elma home with loving family at his side. Major was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Sparta, N.C., to Rufus and Mallie Joines. He grew up in Allegheny County, N.C., and completed High School in Piney Creek, N.C.
Major married Eilleen DeWitt on Jan. 22, 1949, in Hagerstown, Md. He worked at Simpson Timber Company for 9 years, was a self-employed semi-truck driver for 2 years and drove motor freight on Grays Harbor for 27 years. Major was a lifetime member of the Elma Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Father advisor to the Order of Rainbow for Girls in Elma. He was also the President of Shuffleboard in Indio, Calif., for five years.
Major enjoyed carpentry, gardening, golf, attending sporting events, reading and handyman work for his children and grandchildren. Major also served three terms on the Elma School Board. Major is survived by his children; Linda Mize, Dennis Joines, Greg Joines, Richard Joines and Cheri Finger, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eilleen, parents, several nieces and nephews and one grandchild.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma. Graveside services will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Masonic Cemetery in Elma.
