R. L. (Bob) Metke passed away from pancreatic cancer on March 1, 2014, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash. He was born on October 18, 1938, to Lillian and Lloyd Metke and grew up in Montesano. He graduated from Montesano High School in 1956, where he played baseball and football.
Bob spent three years in the U.S. Navy after high school, attended Grays Harbor College, and married Darlene Fickeisen and later divorced. They had two children, Jeff and Marci. Bob loved his work with J.M. McConkey Co., selling horticulture supplies and equipment to nurseries and landscape businesses in the Pacific Northwest. He married Marianna, his wife of 28 years, and they shared work and honors in this industry. In 2008, they both received the Pacific Coast Nurseryman Outstanding Service Award from the Washington State Nursery-Landscape Industry. After retiring, Bob became an accomplished fused-glass artist. Even though Bob died to soon, he and Marianna got to celebrate the Seahawks Super Bowl Year; they had season tickets!
Bob is survived by his wife, Marianna; son, Jeff and wife, Teresa; three grandchildren; brother, Paul Metke of Aberdeen; and sister, Linda Metke of Sandy, Utah. Sadly his daughter, Marci passed away at age 26, in 1991.
A burial and memorial service is planned for 12 p.m., on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Bay View Cemetery near Burlington, Wash., with a gathering at Maple Hall, La Conner, Wash.
