Robert T. Newberry, 87, died on April 3, 2014, in Olympia, Wash. He was born in Chehalis, Wash., on Feb. 24, 1927, to Gordon R. and Ruby L. Newberry. He graduated from Chehalis High School in 1945. He then served a short time in the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II, discharged in August 1947.
He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Business Administration in June, 1953. He married Martha J. Coulter in Olympia, Wash., on March 18, 1951. Following graduation, he started an accounting business at Amanda Park on the Olympic Peninsula in 1953 and later became an accountant for Lamb-Grays Harbor in Hoquiam, Washington. He then became controller for Western Gear Corp Heavy Machinery division in Everett, Washington, and later controller and Vice President of Administration in their subsidiary corporation in Salinas, California. He returned to Grays Harbor in 1971 and became Controller for Lamb Grays Harbor Co.
In 1982, Mr. Newberry was employed with the State of Washington Department of Revenue until his retirement in 1992. In June 2000, he and his wife moved to Olympia, Washington where they resided until his death.
He is survived by his wife Martha, and their children Joan Newberry, Jan Brieske (husband Dale), Scott Newberry (wife Sandy), David Newberry (wife Janean ), and grandchildren Maxs, Tom, Kayla, Kasey and Sammy. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. at the Abigail Stuart House in Olympia at Washington and 10th Avenue SE.
