14-month sentence over drunken punch

A Napavine man was sentenced to one year, two months in prison for trying to punch a Westport Police Department officer checking his condition while he was passed out on the shoulder of a road.

Jason B. Roehl, 31, was sentenced in Grays Harbor Superior Court Tuesday for third-degree assault. According to court documents, the officer responded to a call about a man on the ground in the area of North Forrest and West Sprague streets on July 5. After the officer roused Roehl, court documents state, it appeared Roehl was “quite drunk.”

When the officer called for medical aid, he was asked to search Roehl for weapons. During the search, Roehl swung at the officer with closed fists twice, both times blocked by the officer’s forearm. Roehl also tried to spit at the officer multiple times.

In his sentencing statement, Roehl acknowledged a history of alcohol problems and apologized to the officer.
