About 20 acres of beach burned near Ocean Shores Tuesday afternoon, apparently the result of a car illegally driving in the dunes.
Eight fire departments fought the fire for about four hours to get it under control, Ocean Shores Fire Department Capt. Mike Thuirer said.
“It’s probably the biggest fire we’ve had in 15 years,” he said.
The source of the fire is believed to be a car illegally driving in the dunes, although investigators were still on scene Wednesday. The unidentified man driving the car was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital with burns to his feet, and the car was destroyed by the fire.
Ocean Shores was assisted by Hoquiam, Aberdeen and Lake Quinault fire departments as well as fire districts 7, 8 and 16 and Department of Natural Resources firefighters.
One home’s siding was melted by the heat, but no other homes were damaged.
“We were really, really fortunate we didn’t lose houses,” Thuirer said.
