Aberdeen touts first female firefighter

Monica Myers, 44, the Aberdeen Fire Department’s first female firefighter, stands in front of a fire truck at the department’s main office on Tuesday. Myers, a former stay-at-home mom and successful small business owner, decided about six years ago that she wanted a radical career change after volunteering at the Montesano Fire Department. Myers, who is the wife of Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers, worked steadily acquiring the different certifications she needed, eventually gaining her paramedic certification. Myers’ first day on the job was Tuesday. “I’m so excited,” Myers said about working with the department. “It’s a great opportunity and I am proud to be working here.”
