APD seeks driver who fled

The Aberdeen Police Department is looking for help locating the driver of a stolen white 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse who fled from police early Thursday morning.

An officer responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle behind Broadway Manor at about 2 a.m. Thursday, and spotted the car driving in the area. When he attempted to contact the driver, the car sped off southbound on Broadway Street.

The driver turned westbound onto West First Street, reaching an estimated 80 mph.

“The suspect car appeared to go airborne as it crossed Park Street,” Capt. John Green wrote in a press release.

The driver then turned southbound on Division Street, where a car apparently slid sideways during the turn and struck a fence and stop sign post. The pursuing officer found the vehicle with the driver’s side door open and smoke coming from the engine compartment.

Witnesses pointed out the direction the suspect ran away, and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit conducted a track but was unable to locate a suspect.

The registered owner of the car was contacted after the chase, at which time it was reported stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Aberdeen Police Department at 533-3180 or the tip line at 538-4450.
