Bonfire turns tragic in Ocean Shores as home burns

OCEAN SHORES — A Saturday-evening backyard fire turned tragic when sparks from the blaze caught a shed on fire and then spread to a home in the 600 block of Duck Lake Drive SE.

All the residents and visiting family managed to escape the home, which the residents believed was a total loss. Firefighters from Ocean Shores, Grays Harbor County Fire District No. 9 and Hoquiam responded shortly before 9 p.m. and were still on the scene an hour later when the fire was finally extinguished.

Residents said they tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but the blaze quickly spread in the warm conditions.

The residents had lived there for three years and were having a backyard fire with friends and family. The area is near Chinook Park southeast of Duck Lake.
