Extra law enforcement patrols wrote 170 tickets to distracted or unbuckled drivers during this year’s Click it or Ticket campaign in Grays Harbor County. That’s up from last year’s total of 46 citations, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Of this year’s infractions, 101 were for using a cell phone or electronic device and 37 were for seat belt infractions.
Extra patrols between May 20 and June 2 also caught eight speeding violations, two child passenger safety infractions and 27 uninsured motorists. Two alcohol-related arrests were made.
Statewide, law enforcement officers wrote 2,321 seat belt violations and 1,448 cell phone or texting tickets. Last year, during this same time period, officers on the extra patrols statewide issued tickets for 3,171 seat belt violations and 1,059 cell phone violations.
The Grays Harbor Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force, law enforcement from Grays Harbor County, and more than 130 police and sheriff agencies statewide worked the extra patrols, funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
