Commercial building fire may have been arson

A fire that destroyed almost an entire East Aberdeen commercial building on Tuesday morning is being investigated as a possible arson, according the Aberdeen Fire Department.

The fire occurred around 12:50 a.m. and was responded to after reports of black smoke near the Wishkah River Bridge and coming up from the back of the building located at 600 E. Wishkah St. It is being looked into as a “suspicious fire” and is under investigation with the Aberdeen Police Department due to the location and area of origin of the fire, according to fire department Assistant Fire Chief Rich Malazia.

The building — home to Hagen and Bates Law Firm, Cheryl Demoss Massage, The Body Shop Massage and A Classic Cut hair salon — was estimated to be around 85 percent damaged with a estimated total damage cost of $950,000.

The first engine started attacking the exterior fire but soon realized fire was spreading through the building’s attic. Multiple crews were sent into the burning building and the fire was under control within about an hour and a half.

Crew were on scene until about 6:30 a.m. putting out hot spots and salvaging contents.
