MONTESANO — Grays Harbor County Commissioner Herb Welch returned to work on Monday — at least on a part-time basis.
Welch dialed in to the commissioners’ morning meeting on Monday. He said he’s getting his energy back slowly but surely and progressively getting better. He says he doesn’t feel good enough to come into the office quite yet, but he’s getting there.
Welch is at Pacific Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hoquiam, where he says he’s undergoing intensive physical therapy with round-the-clock care. His wife Dolores is by his side. He says he’s lost all movement in his right leg, but is hopeful with therapy and doctor’s care it could get better.
On Monday, Welch joined his fellow commissioners in approving a travel request for the Public Health division. He also joined fellow Commissioner Frank Gordon in approving a promotion in the Juvenile Detention Center.
Commissioner Wes Cormier recused himself from voting for the promotion because it’s for his brother and he saw a clear conflict of interest. The promotion was put on hold until Welch could vote on the issue.
“I completely understand why Wes did what he did and support his decision,” Welch said.
Welch was originally hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on June 19 with heart issues.
