The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office is investigating why a 1994 Honda Civic swerved into oncoming traffic and hit a 2006 GMC Diesel pickup head-on on Wishkah Road late Friday night.
The Aberdeen Fire Department said that the 19-year-old passenger and 20-year-old driver of the Civic became trapped inside the car and required extrication with heavy rescue tools. Both had to be transported to Harborview Medical Center.
A nursing supervisor with Harborview reported Saturday evening that the passenger was in “serious” condition. A status update for the driver was not available.
Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate said the transport to Harborview was important because of an equipment failure at Grays Harbor Community Hospital where they weren’t able to do tests to determine internal injuries.
The male driver and female passenger of the truck were also transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for precautionary reasons and then released, Shumate said.
The accident happened at just after 11 p.m. The Aberdeen Fire Department and the Wishkah Volunteer Fire Department were both dispatched to the scene. The road was closed for more than an hour.
Shumate said blood samples were taken from the 20-year-old driver of the compact car for investigation of intoxication, although investigators were still looking into the case.
