Election filing opens Monday

Although elections are still a few months away, the time for candidates to register is fast approaching. Those interested in holding public office will be able to file starting next Monday.

Grays Harbor County Elections Administrator Katy Moore said it’s too soon to tell which elections will be heated.

“We try not to predict anything because you never know what will come up,” Moore said.

Most of the races involve city councils and school boards, but there are two countywide races.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s position will be on the ballot this year, with incumbent Sheriff Rick Scott planning on running to finish former Sheriff Mike Whelan’s term. There is one year left in the term. Scott was appointed sheriff in October of 2012 when Whelan retired.

Although he’s only served as sheriff for a short time, Scott, who was the longtime undersheriff, said he enjoys the job. He has made some changes since taking over the department, including schedule changes for corrections officers at the Grays Harbor County Jail and flexible start times for department employees. If elected, Scott hopes to secure funding for equipment upgrades and to update security on the Grays Harbor County campus.

“Dealing with strapped budgets is always difficult,” Scott said. “But I feel like we’ve been stepping up and doing what we can. And I hope to continue doing that.”

The Port Commission seat representing the eastern part of the county is the other countywide race. Incumbent Chuck Caldwell of Montesano has announced that he intends to run again.

The Aberdeen City Council will have six seats on the ballot this year, and long-time members Alice Phelps, Tim Alstrom, Kathi Hoder and John Erak all plan on running again. The Hoquiam City Council will have seven positions up for grabs, and longtime council member Byron Hyde has announced that he won’t seek another term.
