Scott Pierson, Aberdeen High School band director for most of the 1990s, and Olympia High School band director since then, has died.
Even though Olympia High students have today off because of a teacher in-service day, grief counseling will be made available Friday morning at the school. “We’re very sad to hear of his passing,” district spokeswoman Rebecca Japhet said. “We would like to offer our condolences to the family.”
District officials sent an email to Olympia High families about the news yesterday.
“At this time we do not have specific details related to Scott’s passing,” the e-mail stated. “…We are making counselors available tomorrow at Olympia High School to serve as a resource for our students, staff, and families as they work through the grieving process and have the need to talk or express difficult feelings.”
Pierson began working in the district in early 2001, Japhet said.
Besides teaching band at Olympia High, Pierson was involved in music programs at several elementary schools in the Olympia School District.
He was recently involved in the surprise concert for Aberdeen High choral director Pat Wilhelms upon her retirement. He directed the pit orchestra.
