The Grays Harbor Community Foundation announced the recipients of $380,000 in scholarships to 256 students this week. The foundation culled the recipients from 425 applications, according to foundation Program Officer Cassie Lentz.
“This year was the most competitive we have ever had,” Lentz said in a press release. “We had so many wonderful and qualified candidates, but a limited number of awards to give.”
Lentz noted that the foundation offered five new scholarships this year — the Miles Zepp Memorial Scholarship, Stanley and Elizabeth Oskamp Scholarship, the Wes Berglund Memorial Scholarship, the Westby Family Scholarship and the L. George Pauze Memorial Scholarship.
“Our community has been extremely generous and it is because of them that our scholarship program has continued to address the need of funding a quality education for those in our community,” she said.
“We take pride in the fact that our recipients are from all areas of Grays Harbor and Pacific County, and that we support whatever it is that they want to do,” added scholarship committee chairman Rich Vroman. “There are a variety of reasons students are seeking scholarships and we are fortunate enough to be able to offer some financial support to make their dreams come true.”
All scholarship winners, their families, school principals, counselors, and donors are invited to an Awards Breakfast at the Aberdeen Elks, Wednesday, May 29th at 8:00 a.m. A continental breakfast will be served and the scholarship recipients, donors, and Board members are encouraged to meet each other. The students will receive certificates of award during a brief ceremony.
A complete list of the 2013 scholarship recipients is available on page A2.
