Funeral planned for baby abandoned in Ocean Shores

Family members of the infant found dead in Ocean Shores in early April will host a funeral Thursday at 1 p.m. at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen. Arrangements are being made by the baby’s grandmother, Dee Taylor, through Whiteside Family Mortuary.

Steve Wells, deputy coroner at the Grays Harbor County Coroner’s Office, said the remains were released to the child’s mother’s family.

Brittany Taylor, 22, gave birth to the infant in an Ocean Shores motel with help from her boyfriend, Patrick Parnel, also 22. Both face charges in the baby’s abandonment and death. The newborn’s body was found in the woods near Ocean Shores Airport April 5. Parnel initially told police the baby appeared dead after he dropped her in the toilet during the birth. In a follow-up interview, Parnel allegedly told police the newborn was alive when he brought her to the woods, intending to leave her there, and that he struck her with an object from his car when she began to cry.

The prosecutor’s office is still awaiting results of a DNA test to confirm that Patrick Parnel is in fact the baby’s father.

“Until the DNA evidence comes back, we have no idea if the presumed father is actually the father,” Wells said. “We know that the mother is actually the mother, so she was given rights to the remains.”

Parnel has been charged with first-degree murder. Brittany Taylor is charged with first-degree abandonment of a dependent person. Both are in custody awaiting trial.
