Hoquiam deaths ruled murder-suicide

The recent deaths of a couple found in their home in Hoquiam have been ruled a “murder-suicide,” officials at the county Coroner’s Office said Thursday.

Deputy Coroner Lane Youmans said Mark Hinzman, 53, stabbed his wife Mary Hinzman, 48, to death, then stabbed himself in the chest, taking his own life. No other details about the killing were released to the public.

On Monday afternoon, the couple’s son, Eric Hinzman, 24, came home to find the Hoquiam couple dead in the kitchen of their home located in the 3100 Block of Sumner Avenue.

Neighborhood residents gathered outside the home the night of the killing speculated about the death, some noting problems that the Hinzmans had recently been going through, while others called the Hinzmans an ideal couple that were very affectionate with each other.

Autopsies were conducted Wednesday afternoon and evening. Officials from the Hoquiam Police Department have declined to give other details about the case until tomorrow, when they said they will issue a press release.
