A Hoquiam man was killed Tuesday in Mason County after the car he was traveling in spun out of control and was hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer truck.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Richard Lee Bieniek, 52, of Hoquiam, and Mary Irene Johnson, age 51, of Hoodsport, were in a Honda Accord traveling southbound on State Route 101 when it spun around and crossed into opposing traffic. The semi, a 1990 Kenworth plowed into the passenger side of the Honda. Both Bieniek and Johnson died at the scene. The driver of the truck, Chester Rhoades, was not injured. It was raining during the accident. The cause of the wreck is under investigation. “All we know is that they lost control for some reason,” said Trooper Russ Winger, public information officer for State Patrol District Eight.
