Hoquiam Police officers are sporting a new look as of this week.
The city’s police force has had to change uniforms from its old two-toned look to a new dark blue uniform, largely because the Seattle Police Department changed its uniform, too.
Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers explained that when Seattle decided to change the look of its police uniforms, which were nearly identical to the old Hoquiam uniforms, that left the supplier with little recourse but to discontinue the style.
“There’s only one supplier: Blumenthal’s Uniforms in Seattle. It’s a specific color, a specific type of fabric and a specific type shirt and pants,” Myers said of the old uniforms. The shirts were light blue with Navy pockets, and the pants were dark blue, almost black.
The company buys batches in of 500 per size, and they only make them in wool for the old uniforms, Myers said. Portland police also used to have a light blue shirt but have gone to the dark blue color.
“As for cost, the shirts and pants are less in price than the old version as those shirts only came in wool due to limited supply and demand,” Myers said.
The new uniforms are available from a variety of manufacturers and Myers said they “seem to be more comfortable while still looking very professional.”
