Investigation continues in fatal Aberdeen apartment fire

Police and fire investigations continue following an apartment building fire in downtown Aberdeen last month that left one woman with burns that caused her death.

Kelly Lovell, 48, died at Harborview Medical Center the day after the March 8 fire from “thermal burns and inhalation of toxic products of combustion,” according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The investigation is still in progress, Aberdeen Police Capt. John Green said Friday.

“We’re not commenting. We have to wait for the complete autopsy results from King County,” Green said.

A unit in the Gray Apartments on the 200 block of East Wishkah Street caught fire the afternoon of March 8. Initially, firefighters said, the smoke was so thick they didn’t realize the apartment’s occupant was inside.

Firefighters on scene noted the building’s fire alarms had been pulled, but the system appeared to be non-functional. Green declined to comment on whether that issue was part of the investigation.
