Local author Rex Paul Martin and North Cove photographer Marcy Merrill have recently published a book entitled “Dogs Tell Their Stories.”
In the coffee table-style book, Martin and Merrill attempt to capture the humorous and poignant sides of the stories of unusual dogs and their humans, with the narrative through the eyes of the book’s canine characters.
“It’s through the dogs’ words,” Martin said. They talk about their lives and they talk about their owners through their own viewpoints.”
Martin said it took him and Merrill about 16 months to complete the 106-page hardcover, and it features all sorts of dogs with interesting … well … tales.
“It’s a big, hulking book,” said Merrill, who shot all the photographs. “It was a really fun project. We’re pretty proud of it.”
She said it was a challenging project as some of the dogs were easier to photograph than others.
“They all photograph in their own ways,” but some were pretty wild,” she said.
The book includes dogs who work on search and rescue teams, a retired greyhound champion racer who wants his owners to retire with him, and a couple of dogs who’ve been through the prison system.
Martin noted that two of the featured dogs are part of the Stafford Creek Correctional Center’s “Freedom Tails” program.
Part of proceeds to training program
“A big part of this book is about the program at Stafford Creek,” he said, and both he and Merrill noted that part of the proceeds from the book will go toward that local training program.
Merrill and Martin will be holding three local book-signing events, including one this afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Westport Maritime Museum’s lens building.
Next weekend, on Saturday, Nov. 3, they will be signing books at the Westport Winery from 2 to 4 p.m.
There will be a third “bring-your-dog” signing beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at The Tinder Box in Westport.
“It’s going to be an all-day thing, everybody can bring their dogs,”Martin said of the December event. “We’re going to have fun and sign the book and all that kind of stuff.”
The book is available on the internet via Amazon.com or by calling (360)267-1036 or via email firstname.lastname@example.org. It retails for $49.95 but is available locally for $39. It is also available on Amazon.com for a limited time at the reduced price.
