A train killed a pedestrian lying on the tracks outside of Elma this morning.
Undersheriff Rick Scott said that investigators are still working out the details of what happened and hope to identify the man soon.
Scott said that it appears the man was lying on the tracks earlier this morning as the train was approaching. He said the train sounded its horn and the conductor noted some movement from the man, but he was not able to get out of the way of the train in time.
Scott said that detectives believe the man may be transient or homeless. They found a bicycle nearby and many personal possessions. The accident happened about two miles outside of Elma on Highway 12 toward Oakville on the 5100 block of the highway.
The Coroner’s Office was at the scene this morning and railroad officials are cooperating with detectives, Scott said.
