Grays Harbor Relay For Life to raise money in the fight against cancer will launch its 2013 campaign on Saturday with a big change in store for this year’s event, set for May 31-June 1 at the Sea Breeze Oval at Hoquiam High School.
This year, the East Grays Harbor Relay For Life will be a completely separate fundraiser, held June 14-15 at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds in Elma.
This Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon at Hoquiam’s 7th St. Theatre, the Grays Harbor Relay organizing committee will host a “Mega Kick-off” where the theme of this year’s relay will be revealed.
Jane Madtson, regional council chairwoman for the American Cancer Society that benefits from the Relay efforts, said this year’s relay has been chosen for a special cancer prevention study research project, and details will be discussed at the kick-off.
“We are inviting anyone who wants to come, teams, sponsors, survivors or anyone who would like to know more about Relay For Life,” Madtson said.
With separate events on different weekends, Madtson noted the new schedule now allows teams to participate in both relays or attend both events.
Combined, the relays last year raised about $425,000, which was No. 1 per capita in a 12-state division and No. 2 in the nation.
“That is pretty phenomenal for a small area like ours,” Madtson said.
