Second burglary at JC Penney store

For the second time in less than a month, the JC Penney store in the SouthShore Mall was burglarized overnight and the thief or thieves got away with an undetermined amount of jewelry, mostly gold.

Aberdeen Police received a call about an audible alarm going off about 2:10 Saturday morning at the store. When officers arrived, they found a broken window, allowing entry to the building.

“There were jewelry items that were missing, and we’re still getting an inventory to find out everything that is missing,” said Aberdeen Police Cpl. Darren King. “But it appears it was mostly gold, or gold-colored items, specifically gold rope chains or chain necklaces.”

Witnesses had called police saying they had seen someone flee on foot, but police were unable to locate any suspects, King said.

The break-in was similar to one that occurred April 8 in the early morning hours.

In the earlier break-in, an undisclosed amount of jewelry was taken from several display cases after a glass door was broken out at the store.
