Sharp meets with Turkish ambassador

Quinault Indian Nation President Fawn Sharp was invited to Washington, D.C., this week to meet with Namik Tan, Turkey’s ambassador to the United States, in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

Sharp also is the president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and met with the ambassador at his request on Monday.

Native American Heritage Month began Nov. 1 with a proclamation by President Barack Obama to “renew our commitment to respecting each tribe’s identity while ensuring equal opportunity to pursue the American dream.”

In a statement, Sharp thanked the president for the proclamation and lauded Ambassador Tan for “his obvious support for the spirit of this proclamation.”

“It is also our hope that such meetings with foreign officials will result in positive and proactive nation-to-nation dialogue, commerce and cultural exchange,” she said.
