A 21-year-old Aberdeen man appears to have taken his own life Thursday night while a 15-year-old Montesano area boy attempted suicide at his home in a separate incident, law enforcement officials said today.
Aberdeen Police Capt. John Green said officers responded at about 9:30 p.m. to a home on the 1500 block of Arnold Street to find the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities also responded to a home in rural Montesano to find a teenager who apparently attempted to take his life. The teen remains at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Both incidents occurred the same evening as community members had gathered at Aberdeen High School to discuss suicide prevention and trauma in the wake of several recent suicides involving young people on the Harbor. About 65 people attended Thursday night’s discussion.
Green said investigators have identified the deceased Aberdeen man as a volunteer firefighter with the Ocean Shores Fire Department. He was found in his home with several notes to friends and family.
“It’s sad as hell,” Green said.
Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Pimentel with the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office reported the teen was found Thursday at his home along Camp Creek Road. Investigators recovered a note from his room. His condition was unknown this morning.
County officials report five teenagers, between the ages of 14 and 19, have committed suicide since last June. Community leaders have found the rash of suicides deeply troubling. Records show both 2009 and 2010 listed one teen death each as a result of suicide.
