Teacher of the year has been with Aberdeen for 35 years

It was an emotional moment at Tuesday night’s Aberdeen School Board meeting when Cindy Moore was surprised with being named the district’s Teacher of the Year.

“You kept a secret?” she exclaimed, beaming at her extended family members who came forward once she was announced.

Central Park Elementary Principal Jim Sawin nominated Moore, saying Tuesday night that he has observed her great teaching abilities for 25 years. Moore has worked with the district for 35 years, currently is a physical education teacher at Central Park Elementary and Robert Gray Elementary schools.

“She still has the same enthusiasm,” Sawin told The Daily World, adding she is always willing to give her time and talents in any circumstance. “She really wants kids to be successful, and sets it up so that kids are successful … She’s just a gem.”

In the Aberdeen School District, nominations for Teacher of the Year can be submitted by anyone, including staff, parents or community members. The selection committee is made up of former winners of the honor.
