Westport Windriders will ‘paint the sky’ over Grayland this weekend

Ocean waves, sand, sun, and kite flying fun — What better way to spend a summer day? Here’s your opportunity. Traditionally held the second weekend in July, the annual Westport Windriders Kite Festival is this weekend on the beach in Grayland.

The Westport Windriders Kite Club and friends will fill the Grayland skies with bright colors and amaze you with high-flying feats that demonstrate extreme precision and artistry.

The fun continues today and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. each day. Turn west off SR105 at the old red schoolhouse to get to the action. An information booth there will have a schedule of all events.

The festival will include this year’s special guest flier, Maple Grove, Minnesota resident, Barbara Meyer. A world-renowned kite designer, her designs combine intricate American patchwork techniques, geometrics and strong colors to produce kites that have won numerous competitions and have commanded high prices at kite auctions. She has been a longtime, active member of the American Kitefliers Association and has served as the organization’s president.

There will be competitions for sport, handcrafted, and fighter kites, as well as daily group ascensions that will ‘paint the sky’ with brilliant colors. There’s a special kite-building workshop for children, vendors on the beach that will help get you flying high, as well as Teddy Bear drops for kids.
