Shelton beating victim dies; police arrest 20-year-old suspect

Shelton police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with Tuesday night’s beating of a man who has since died from injuries he suffered during an attack downtown.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree assault. The beating victim later died about 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon; the Mason County Prosecuting Attorney will now likely amend the charge to reflect the victim’s death by homicide, according to a news release from the Shelton Police Department.

The homicide victim was identified Thursday as Talon Newman, 27, of Shelton.

Shelton police were dispatched to the corner of 1st Street and Railroad Avenue downtown after 11 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, they found an unconscious man, later identified as Newman, who was the apparent victim of an assault. Witnesses indicated a group of males were seen fleeing the area on foot.

Newman was taken by ambulance to Mason General Hospital, then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died Wednesday.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Newman and the suspect had an argument which led to the assault. The investigation is ongoing.
